Yota Morimoto is a Japanese composer born in San Paulo, Brazil, currently undertaking a doctorate research at the University of Birmingham, UK. His works explore unconventional approaches to generating and transmitting sound, implementing models of noise, turbulence and abstract machines. Works have been presented at festivals and conferences such as Gaudeamus Music Week [amsterdam], TodaysArtFestival [den haag], NWEAMO [mexico], Transmediale [berlin], ISEA [ruhr, istanbul], makeart festival [poitier], EMUfest [rome], ICMC [belfast], and SMC [porto, barcelona].
Transnd.xy is an audio-visual performance about xy-plot, feedback, and sound generated by transnd, a software developed by Yota.
Pierre Borel – solo saxophone
Pierre Borel is a parisian saxophonist and composer, working in the field of improvised and experimental music. Since 2006 he is residing in Berlin taking part of the high flow of ongoing creativity that is centered there. He has performed in most european countries, Japan and USA and is a regular playmate of Tobias Delius, Joel Grip, Hannes Lingens, Derek Shirley, Tetuzi Akiyama, Christoph Kurzmann, Didier Lasserre to name a few. He attained a master degree in Jazz at the Jazz Institute in Berlin in 2008, and continues questioning music and life through his studies in philosophy in Paris. Together with Florian Bergmann and Hannes Lingens, he is running the Umlaut Berlin collective that in recent years released three records and organized two festivals of improvised music. Musicians he had the opportunity to play with: Hannes Lingens, Derek Shirley, Christof Kurzmann, Tobias Delius, Clayton Thomas, Joel Grip, Axel Doerner, Ignaz Schick, Tetuzy Akiyama, Didier Lasserre, Madoka Kouno, Christian Marien and many others…
EKE – free improvisation trio
The electric clavichord which Oscar Jan Hoogland plays is a good metaphor for the music of the trio Eke. The instrument from the harpsichord family refers to early music, but by adding analog electronics the pianist lifts it well into the 21st century. He may also lash at it as a punk guitarist would do. Added to the primal scream saxophonist Yedo Gibson gets from his instrument and Gerri Jäger’s frenetic drumming this yields a new form of power music, which has its roots in both classic free jazz and the punk improv of a band like The Ex. The members of Eke are, however, fully aware that music consisting of purely climactic eruptions would eventually become predictable and boring. Therefore every sonic hurricane always has an eye where everything stands still, and in the band’s music there is room for quietude and small sounds. From this feel a rock beat may pick up the pace and send the music towards a new climax. The tension curve then cleverly winds down and the whole affair may end in silence. This subtle use of dynamics makes Eke’s music permanently exciting, both for the listener and the musicians. It is optimal instant composing, in a sound world that bears close resemblance to the sound art of 20th century composed music.
Yedo Gibson was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1981. At the age of 11 he started to play the tenor saxophone and on his 15ths was giving classes at the AquiJazz conservatoire in Sao Paulo and playing all over Brazil with various musicians such as Mario Margarido,”Panda” Gianfratti, Ricardo Zoio and others. In 1999 he joined the Armazen Abapuru, group of traditional Brazilian music in a contemporary context where he was in charge of the development of the improvisation aspect in the group. They recorded 2 albums with musicians of Hermeto Pascoal group (Nene, Carlos Malta and Jovino Santos Neto). Armazen has been traveling all over Brazil giving workshops and Concerts in the Vila Lobos Caravana Musical Project. Parallel with this he was starting his own work with the drummer Panda Gianfratti, with had recorded 5 albums including with a sextet called Abaetetuba directed by Yedo. In the beggining of 2004 he moved to London where was working with Veryan Weston, Sakoto Fukuda, Hanna Marshal and Nana Tisiboe, started the Quintet of Uncertainty, a group that performed at the BBC, The Vortex Jazz Club and other places in London. Also, Yedo joined the London Improvisers Orchestra together with improvisers from London like Evan Parker, Steve Beresford, Lol Coxhill, Marcio Mattos and others. In London Yedo started to play in the Free Samba Trio with Steve Noble and Dominic Lash. The main goal of the group was searching for the free context inside of traditional Brazilian and African music. After 2 years he moved to Amsterdam but at the same time started his quartet called “Caetitu” that later recorded a Cd to EMANEM with Marcio Mattos, Veryan Weston and Martin Blume. In The Netherlands he founded The Royal Improvisers Orchestra (RIO) a group of 20 young musicians from all kind of backgrounds playing improvised music conducted by him and other musicians from the orchestra. Also in Amsterdam he started a trio with Oscar Jan Hoogland and Gerri Jager “EKE” with is as he calls his Punk Improv project where Oscar uses his Electric Clavivhord and Yedo his Baritone Sax together with Gerri’s Rock drums. As free lancer in Amsterdam he has been working with musicians like Han Bennink, Michael Vatcher, Cor Fuhler, Luc Ex and other free improvisers.
Oscar Jan Hoogland, Amsterdam 1983, is an improviser, pianist, composer who is working actively in the field of both music and dance improvisation in Amsterdam. Doing so he works within fixed bands and groups as well as in first time collaboration settings. Besides improvising he has composed for several theater and dance pieces and has been writing for his own groups as well as for other ensembles and soloists. By now he is traveling the rest of Europe, Brazil and Argentina with his bands playing at festivals like Moers, North Sea Jazz, Dublins 12 points and Buenos Aires Jazz. Current bands are EKE, The Ambush Party, The Royal Improviser Orchestra, The Phonograph Orchestra, Chris Corstens Kwartet, trio Hoogland | Austbø | Baggiani, solo electric clavichord, [dB]danceBand, de Bakfietsband, Voiceover, Duo Han Bennink/Oscar Jan Hoogland and The Job.
Gerri Jagger picked up the drums when he was 9 years old. After some brass-band and grunge-metal teenage years he studied jazz at the Conservatories of Innsbruck and Amsterdam. Through years of playing in numerous different bands from free-jazz to alt-rock, playing modern dance-improvs, experimental club music and improvisation, Gerri developed into a flexible listening musician, looking for ways to expand boundaries in music. Current bands include Knalpot, EKE and The Black Napkins. He has performed a.o. with Jozef Dimoluin, Franz Hauzinger, Ron Anderson, Wolter Wierbos, Han Bennink, Ab Baars, Achim Kaufmann, Luc Ex, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, Colin Stetson, Shazad Ismaily, Marc Ducret, Frank Möbus, Terrie Ex. Gerri has toured throughout Europe, USA and Brazil, and has released albums on Rat Records, Eat Concrete, Red Note, PAO Records and Cuneiform.
