Stefano Sgarbi (laptop) & Ruben Brovida (analog modular synthesiser)
Stefano Sgarbi is a composer, researcher and sound artist. He is currently a student at the Institute of Sonology in Den Haag where he has found himself in a rather prolific and inspiring artistic environment. His interests, starting from a general attraction to art and particularly music, are now more specifically towards generative art, algorithmic composition, live electronic music and sonic experiments based on free improvisation. Besides the independent projects he is developing and researching, he’s being part of many collaborations including sound design for theatre and film, sound-installations and music improvisation. He is also engaged in organizing music events and concerts with a strong consideration for avant-garde and innovative approaches to music, sound and any form of art.
Ruben Brovida Bio Born in Italy in 1990, near Turin, He followed lessons in piano and drums, until the age of 17 years where he started playing synthesizers and drum machines. Finished high school He decides to devote himself to music and enrolled at the Conservatory of Cuneo Ghedini in the Electroacustic departement. In the third year, thanks to the Erasmus program, He moved to the Institute of Sonology in The Hague, where he is currently enrolled. His passion is divided between the experimental electronic music and design of interactive installations.
Yedo Gibson (reeds) & Makiko Ito (dance)
Yedo Gibson’s story is quite simple, he was living in São Paulo (Brazil) a big city with 21.000.000 people and a incredible concrete jungle and it happen to be playing music too, after many years playing Brazilian music, free improvisation started to take place in his music. Waking up and sleeping with this constant noise that this huge city makes it was inevitable to not have it on his music. As any 3rd world citizen he had to improvise every day and that is what happen to my “forró” (Brasilian music from the north east), became more and more full of noises and freer in the form and content. So in 2005 after recording “Abaetetuba” and “Contra Mão” he thought that it was time to leave São Paulo and meet some other improvisers around the world. Now he is based in Amsterdam but has been for two years in London where he spent most of my time making music with some amazing musicians as Marcio Mattos, Veryan Weston, John Edwards, Steve Noble, Mark Sanders and also was part of the London Improvisers Orchestra together with Lol Coxhill and Evan Parker between other great musicians from the London free improv scene, that was to him a great school. This orchestra has inspired him to start the Royal Improvisers Orchestra (RIO) in Holland and it has been playing since 2006, with 20 musicians from all over the world and from completely individual angels of music with musicians from Baroque to Punk Noise but with the same passion for the improvisation. Here in Holland, beside his fix groups RIO, Caetitu, Abaetetuba and EkE, he has also been playing with some great musicians that he has learned a lot from as Han Bennink, Michael Vatcher, Luc Ex, Marcos Baggiani, Ab Baars, Cor Fuhler and other ZAAL100 (our free improv place in Amsterdam) friends.
Makiko ITO is a freelance dancer and choreographer, has been performing and teaching in Japan, and abroad (Netherlands, France, England, Germany, Sweden, Poland, Thailand). Since Oct 2005 she bases in Amsterdam, working with Magpie Music Dance Company. Influenced by American teachers, Makiko has developed her own understanding for teaching contact improvisation by her cultural context born and raised in Japan. She is project leader of Wonderland, an improvisation performance project for/with children( NL, Italy, Poland, France, Japan).
Yota Morimoto (electronics)
Yota Morimoto is a japanese sound artist / researcher born in brazil, based in the netherlands. his works deal with the material reality of sound and explore unconventional approaches to generating and transmitting sonic matters, implementing models of noise, turbulence and abstract machines. he has presented works at festivals and conferences such as Gaudeamus Music Week, TodaysArtFestival, GOGBOT festival, NWEAMO [mexico], Transmediale [berlin], ISEA [ruhr, istanbul], makeart festival [poitier], EMUfest [rome], ICMC [belfast, perth], SMC [porto, barcelona] and SICMF [seoul].
