Hannah Marshall is a cellist who is continuing to extract, invent, and exorcize as many sounds and emotional qualities from her instrument as she can. She has been a regular member of Alexander Hawkins’ Ensembles and has toured in Europe and South America with Luc Ex and Veryan Weston’s ensembles – SOL 6 & 12. She plays with ‘String Terrorists’ - Barrel (a trio with Violinist Alison Blunt & Violist/poet Ivor kallin). And has been invited by Fred Frith and Suichi Chino in their residencies at café Oto. She also plays with Terry Day, Tim Hodgkinson, Roger Turner, Paul May, Kay Grant, and the London Improvisers Orchestra.

Renato Ferreira

Renato Ferreira (BR/NL) is a musician, improviser, composer and music teacher based in Amsterdam. Renato plays saxophone and double bass, and holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in composition from the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, he was a member of the ensemble of Ricardo Zohyo – a long-term collaborator of Hermeto Pascoal – studying many forms of Brazilian remote folklore as well as Brazilian instrumental music. In Brazil, he was also part of several post-punk groups such as Patife Band and Ordinaria Hit.

Renato has been active as an improviser since 2004, when he joined the free improvisation group Coletivo Abaetetuba (Antonio Gianfratti, Yedo Gibson, Rodrigo Montoya, Thomas Rohrer) in São Paulo. With this group, he performed in several venues in Brazil and in Europe and recorded four albums between 2004 and 2007, one of them with the participation of London-based cellist Marcio Mattos. In 2009, this group was invited to play at the XIII International Hurta Cordel festival in Madrid, Spain.

In the Netherlands since 2007, he studied classical contemporary composition with Martijn Padding, Cornelis De Bondt, Yannis Kyriakydes a.o. During his Master’s, he composed the music and wrote the libretto of an opera, part of which was performed in The Hague in 2013.

Since 2010, he has been an active improviser and organiser in Amsterdam, where he plays in several ensembles, including Trolleybus, Haffah, the Royal Improvisers Orchestra, Luc Ex’ Music of Inevitable Sounds and his own project, the Native Aliens Ensemble, which is dedicated to playing composed music using forms of Brazilian folk music combined with free improvisation.

With the Royal Improvisers Orchestra, Renato performed in several venues in the Netherlands, including the Bimhuis, Paard Van Troje, Studio Loos, and toured internationally to Brazil. With this orchestra, he also had the chance to play with great improvisers such as Butch Morris, Phil Minton, Han Bennink, Steve Beresford, Tristan Honsinger, Frank Gratkowski, Michael Moore, Wilbert de Joode and the London Improvisers Orchestra.

He also formed and joined several groups in the Amsterdam scene, all of them focused in improvised and contemporary music.

In parallel to his music career, Renato holds a degree in Geography from the University of São Paulo, during which he researched subjects related to economy, politics and urban development, and worked as a geography teacher in the public school system of São Paulo.
