De merel is en bijzondere zangvogel, omdat er geen vaste patronen in zijn melodieën zijn. Hij zingt niet alleen mooi, maar zingt ook steeds een ander lied. De merel maakt zich via zijn gezang kenbaar, hij voegt een geluid toe aan het geluid van zijn omgeving; hij onderscheidt er zich hiermee dus van, hij wordt die ene merel, die zich op die ene tak van die ene boom bevindt. Het mannetje probeert hiermee een vrouwtje te lokken, het vrouwtje is zijn publiek. Wat hij met dit publiek wil is zonneklaar...
Hiermee komen we op een essentieel onderscheid tussen de merel een kunstenaar, een componist en musicus. Het kan zijn dat de kunstenaar precies weet wat hij met zijn publiek wil; in het huidige overheidsbeleid wordt het erg prettig gevonden als dit het geval is, maar de vraag is of het in de kunst altijd wel zo duidelijk moet zijn.

The blackbird is a special songbird, because there are no fixed patterns in its melodies. He sings not only beautiful, but also sings a different song every time. The blackbird makes itself known through its song, he adds a sound to the sound of his surroundings; he thus distinguishes himself from it, he becomes that one blackbird that is on that one branch of that one tree. The man is trying to lure a female, the female is his audience. What he wants with this audience is obvious...
This brings us to an essential distinction between the blackbird an artist, a composer and musician. The artist may know exactly what he wants with his audience; in the present government policy is very pleased if this is the case, but the question is whether it is in the arts should always be so obvious.
